Year 9 Lumen Program ‘Beyond Thinking’ - Sculptures by the Sea Excursion

Year 9 Lumen Program ‘Beyond Thinking’ - Sculptures by the Sea Excursion

Last week the Year 9 ‘Beyond Thinking’ Class took an excursion to Cottesloe Beach to experience the 11th anniversary of the 'Sculptures by the Sea'.
In class, we are currently exploring the concepts of aesthetics and beauty, including the question of what makes something beautiful. The outing to see the sculptures gave us all pieces of work to link with our philosophies and ideas on beauty. All the students had an amazing time and couldn't stop raving about how much they enjoyed themselves.
During our trip we spoke with artist, Andrea Vinkovic, who explained to us the process of designing, creating, constructing and finalising a sculpture to be displayed in the exhibition. Hearing from one of the contributing artists was a very special and unique opportunity that gave us a range of interesting insights. We were all extremely intrigued by the amount of work and effort which is put into producing the sculptures. After talking with Andrea, we were given a tour of the sculptures to see and feel them for ourselves, close up. The interaction with the artwork gave us all a deeper understanding of what we think defines beauty and what our criteria for beauty might include.
The class would like to thank our teachers Mrs Wills and Mr Richards for their help in organising the excursion for us.
