Year 8 Lumen Scitech Brainstorm Challenge Day Highlights

On Wednesday 4 May, students from the Year 8 Lumen elective class ‘Thinking in 3D’, went to Scitech for the Brainstorm Challenge day for Secondary Catholic Schools.

During the day, we participated in multiple challenges in groups of our choice (we called ours the Chocolate Chip Cookies). The first round was an Engineering challenge. Within this challenge, our groups had to work together to earn points by making a personal flotation device to save a 'person' (can of beans) from drowning. To make the float, we had to use supplies you had to "purchase", deducting points from our total.
The second challenge was a flight challenge. We had to make a helium balloon fly through a set of hoops, using a pump and materials, which again we had to "purchase". Over morning tea, we completed an individual physics quiz. The answers were all to be found within Scitech, so this gave us a chance to enjoy the Scitech displays. We were very proud of Dylan O'Donoghue, who won the prize for the highest score in the Physics quiz with 97%!
After a pizza lunch, we were required to write code. Using tools and Java script, we had to direct computerised people to perform actions, complete a drag and drop puzzle and to get a bird to feed their chick. We finished up our activities watching a planetarium show and answering related questions.
I had a great day at Scitech and I just want to do it again! Thank you to Mr Richards and Miss Ardon for arranging such an enjoyable day.
