Just Leadership Day Highlights

Just Leadership Day Highlights

On Wednesday 11 May, a group of Year 10 students, accompanied by Mrs Lindsay, represented the College at the Caritas Just Leadership Conference, held at John XXIII College.
We had the opportunity to hear four ICEA (Indigenous Culture Education and Awareness) volunteers present information which gave us a greater understanding of the issues involving Indigenous people in our society.
We were disturbed to learn that statistics from the 2012 Australian Census showed that only 13% of the Australian population trusted Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders. We are concerned at the lack of awareness in our College community
regarding Indigenous injustice and the discrimination which affects Aboriginal people and their culture.
The conference was centred around Reconciliation Week and we were given time to brainstorm ways in which our College can increase awareness of these issues. Next week we are meeting with Mr Finneran to commence working on a Reconciliation Action Plan for Newman College.
