Walk in Her Shoes

Walk in Her Shoes

Turning on the tap to get a drink of water, or wash our hands or take a shower is something we take for granted. We can drink that water without it making us sick and it is available to us all hours of the day and night. It is an aspect of daily life that we often don’t have to stop to think about. It’s just there. But what if it wasn’t?
During the week of March 16 - 22 over 30 girls from Camara Guild participated in Care Australia’s Walk In Her Shoes Challenge. The challenge is an annual campaign aimed at raising funds to support programmes in developing countries around the world with an emphasis on providing easier access to water. Over the week, the girls were set the challenge of walking 25km, a distance equivalent of walking from Newman to Adventure World in Bibra Lake, or to Burswood and back.
The experience gave us a tangible experience of what it is like for millions of women and girls throughout the world, who are usually the ones to collect water for the families’ needs. The time spent walking prevents girls from attending school and stops women being able to work. Most of the girls were at school at 7 o’clock in the morning, meaning an early start and we walked for about an hour, covering approximately 3km. With 2km still to go to meet our target, lunch times, usually used for socialising or catching up on other things, were sacrificed in order to complete our daily distance goal. Some of the girls completed the kilometres in their own time because of other commitments and it was great to see them rising to the challenge and honouring the pledge to walk.
The enthusiasm and commitment from the girls was fantastic and we exceeded our target fundraising amount before the end of the week, thanks to the generous support of the Newman College community. The term “Challenge” is a worthy title and the girls should be proud of their efforts and fundraising.
