Term 3 Week 7: From The Deputy Principal | Mission and Catholic Identity

Fathers Day Celebrations
Sunday 3 September is Fathers Day. As a College community, this week we have celebrated the gift of fathers and father figures and the way in which they continue to nurture, inspire, love and affirm us. We wish all fathers and father figures a happy Fathers Day for this Sunday.

IMG 82111Lavalla Fathers Day Prayer Assembly – Student Reflections
In preparation for the Fathers Day Prayer Assembly, Year 6 Red reflected on how our fathers guide us along our journey. For each of us, Fathers Day is an opportunity to thank our fathers and all who are like fathers to us for their love and support, to celebrate the blessing they are in our lives, and to pray God’s blessing upon them. We thank God for the gift of our fathers and help us to be thankful for all that they do for us.

‘I love my dad, he means the world to me. His jokes, even though they are dad jokes, are hilarious and if you’re feeling down he will always make you feel better’.
- Holly McCarney – 6 Red

‘My dad is THE DIY dad. He has rebuilt the whole front and back yard, put up walls, planted plants like you've never seen and everything that was brown in our house, dad has painted white. He has done so much more and the best part of that is that I get to follow him around so he's taught me how to do a lot of things too’.
- Jake Spackman – 6 Red

‘My dad encourages me to take risks and try new sports and activities that I've never done before. He always helps me with my homework and gives me lots of hugs’.
- Scarlett Newman – 6 Red

Remar Blue Caravel Solidarity Retreat (Wednesday August 23 – Tuesday August 29 – Week 6/Week 7)
Our 34 Year 11 Remar Blue Caravel students and helm teachers returned from the annual Remar Solidarity Camp in the community of Mullewa on Tuesday 29 August. Br Terry and myself had the privilege of visiting the group on Sunday and Monday of this week to experience the way in which our students engaged with the community of both Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Primary School and the wider Mullewa community through their support of the annual Agricultural Show. Our students represented both themselves and the College community with distinction and were fine ambassadors for the College. Thank you to Miss Louise O’Mahony (Remar Coordinator), Mrs Rebecca Bramanto and Mr Dean Robinett (Remar Blue Helmspeople) who accompanied our students on this important experience of outreach and ministry. Philippines Immersion: Formation Afternoon #2 – Wednesday 30 August
On Wednesday 30 August, our Year 11 Philippines Immersion students gathered for their second formation afternoon in preparation for the Immersion. The afternoon focussed on the history and culture of the Philippines. We welcomed Tia Hunt from St Joseph’s Northam, one of our Marist sister-schools here in WA, who will be joining us on the 2017 Immersion. Our students will be presenting their learning from this workshop to Year 4 students at Lavalla in the coming weeks as part of their ongoing formation.

Marist Association Regional Retreat – New Norcia (25 August – 27 August 2017)
Marist Association RetreatOn Friday evening, Marist Association members from Perth and Bunbury gathered at New Norcia, the place of the first Marists in Western Australia from 1913 – 1964, for a Retreat facilitated by Br Tony Shears fms, Lord Teach Us to Pray – an exploration of our deepening relationship with God, Jesus, the Spirit and Mary.

Our 16 participants were led through a variety of different ways of praying, reflections and personal quiet time by Br Tony. We joined the Benedictine Monks, three of whom are ex-students of Marist Schools from different states, for Mass and Vespers in the Monastery Oratory. We also joined the New Norcia Community for Sunday Mass in the Abbey Church which was originally built in 1861 and has been added to over the years to accommodate the large congregation consisting of the Monks, locals, a number of retreat and school camp groups, tourists and pilgrims who have completed the Camino Walk from St Joseph’s Subiaco in the Footsteps of Dom Salvado and Dom Serra.

The historic and spiritual atmosphere of New Norcia, along with its rich tradition of Marist education, made it an ideal location for our first Marist Association Retreat.

Sacramental Information – Celebrating the Sacraments at Newman College
As the time for the reception of the Sacraments of Confirmation, Eucharist and Reconciliation approaches, parents are asked to notify the College once their child receives each of these Sacraments, to ensure that this data can be added to our records. Upon reception of each Sacrament, students will receive a certificate. Please scan or photograph this certificate and email it to Flora Hughes, Registrar flora.hughes@cewa.edu.au

Newman College and the Marist Association will also acknowledge this significant event in our students' faith journey at Assemblies throughout the year through the presentation of the College’s certificate of acknowledgement.

Weekly Thursday Morning Community Mass (Champagnat Chapel – 8.10am – 8.35am)
All parents, guardians and families across our PK-12 College are invited to attend the weekly Thursday Morning Mass celebrated by Fr Joseph Tran, College Chaplain. Our weekly Community Mass is an important way that we as a Catholic community seek to nourish and live-out our faith in community with one another.
