Term 3 Week 1: From the Head of Primary

Welcome back to Term 3. We are blessed to work in such a supportive community and I look forward to a term focussed on a settled learning environment where our staff will do their best so our students can grow in their faith and learning.

Wellbeing Policy
This term we have launched the Behaviour Management Policy, which is part of our Wellbeing Policy. The focus of managing student behaviour at Newman College is centred on respect and is designed to allow every student to learn in a safe and supportive environment.

The expectations of our students are of the highest standard as we strive for personal excellence for each child. This is not limited to academic excellence but rather excellence in our faith, excellence in the way we show kindness to our peers, excellence in the effort we put in at school and excellence in using our manners and showing respect.

The Behaviour Management Policy is now in effect across the PK-12 College, ensuring a consistent and fair approach as to how we manage issues, restore relationships and support our students to make good choices.

At the conclusion of Term 2, the Year 2 students were surveyed about their classroom and how the College is looking to best meet their individual learning needs. This was a great opportunity to hear from the students as they navigate their learning spaces. The results were very positive, with the vast majority of students saying they are very happy with the structure of Year 2. We will always be monitoring the progress of our students and catering for their individual needs.

Year 2 parents have been invited to an Information Session in Week 3 where the College will discuss the focus of our teaching which allows our students to be successful in their learning.

PALS Program
Our PALS Program will run once again during Term 3 at the Marian Campus to support our students with their reading. If you are able to work with our students one on one for as little as one hour a week, please contact me directly mitchell.bristow@cewa.edu.au. No experience or expertise is needed, just simply the time to listen to our students read.

IMG 3529Newman Run Club (NRC)
NRC will recommence for students in Years 3-12 on Tuesday 25 July. As we move into the Athletic and Cross Country season, NRC will run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (7.15am – 8.15am) followed by breakfast (from Week 2 this term). Students are to meet outside the Sports Complex change rooms. The Run Club Program, developed by ex-student and National middle distance runner Ben Chamberlain, is modified for different age groups and ability levels from Year 3 right through to Year 12. It is a great way to start the day and all students are welcome.

Parking and Pick-Up – Lavalla Campus
A reminder to drivers to be courteous when collecting children using the drive-through at the Lavalla Campus. Please be mindful of the many parents who are also in the queue waiting to collect their child. Most importantly, please avoid parking in this area for any length of time as it can cause a traffic hazard on Empire Avenue when the cars are waiting to join the queue.

Cars in the drive-through should not be left without a driver. If you leave your car to collect your child, please park in the designated bays (not in the staff carpark) rather than leave your car unattended in the drive-through. This way, traffic can keep moving and pick-up is as efficient as possible. We also ask that you pass this information onto anyone else who may be collecting your child from the Lavalla Campus.

Pre Primary Landsdale Farm Excursion
Today the Pre Primary classes will visit the Landsdale Farm as part of their ‘Staying Alive’ Science Program. The students will have many hands on experiences touching and feeding some animals.

Bishops Literacy Assessment
Our Years 3 and Year 5 Units have begun the process of sitting the annual Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment. This is a curriculum-based assessment that reflects the PK-12 Religious Education Units. It focuses on students’ ability to recall content about the Catholic religion and to assess their knowledge and understanding of Religious Education.

This week our students completed system trials for the online assessment, which will be followed by an Equating Assessment on Monday of Week 2. Newman College has been invited to be a part of the Equating Assessment, which will assist in setting benchmarks for the state.

The assessment itself will take place on the following dates:
Year 5 - Monday 7 August
Year 3 - Monday 14 August

Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools and Colleges
Every year Newman College participates in the Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools and Colleges with enthusiasm and excellence, and this year should be no exception.

Particular dates to note for this term are:
Monday 31 July - Lavalla Strings will perform at the afternoon session
Wednesday 23 August - Both Year 5 Choir and Lavalla Choir will perform at the afternoon session

We wish our music groups and individual students all the best for their performances.

Birthday Party Invitations
We ask that families please be mindful of the impact birthday party invitations can have on the classroom community. Unless inviting the entire class, please be discrete and considerate when distributing birthday invitations. It is in fact preferable that this does not happen at school unless inviting the whole class as this can cause angst for children who are not included.

PK-2 Life Education Van
The Life Education Program is coming to the Marian Campus in Term 3, Week 3. Life Education aims to empower our children to make safer and healthier choices through education. Click here for more information.
Parents are invited to attend the Life Education Van on Wednesday 3 August 2.30–3.00pm to see the Programs on offer. The van will be located near the oval and parents can enter and have the opportunity to speak to the presenters.
