Term 2 Week 4: From the Head of Primary

It has been another wonderful week at Newman College with the students being able to develop their God given gifts and talents.

IMG 1991 2Year 6 Camp
I was lucky enough to join the Year 6 students on their camp last week and I was delighted with how well behaved and well mannered our students were. The Forest Edge Adventure Camp was the perfect setting to challenge our students and staff alike as they abseiled, rock climbed, bush walked, built rafts, kayaked and had mud fights. Thank you to our dedicated staff who were on duty 24 hours a day and truly did go beyond their call of duty to make sure the camp was such a success for our students. IMG 6710Mothers Day
We all hope our Mothers and those who are like mothers to us had a wonderful Mothers Day last Sunday. Each Campus held a liturgy to celebrate the love of Mary and the love of our mothers along with pampering sessions and activities. Click here to see more photos.

Pre Primary Reading Workshop
The Pre Primary parents attended a Reading Workshop hosted by the Pre Primary teaching team on Tuesday night. This was an opportunity for parents to see how our staff are working with our students learning to read.

Last week the Year 3 and Year 5 students completed their NAPLAN tests. Thank you for ensuring your children were well rested and in attendance for the testing.

Nature Play / Loose Parts Play
The Lavalla staff met last Thursday to discuss ways in which our students can be more engaged during recess and lunch. A wider range of sports equipment will be purchased, loose parts play will be trialled, lunch time activities will be introduced and continued discussion will occur about a nature play area at the Campus.

Fidget Spinners
As per the College rules it is not appropriate or safe for students to bring any personal items to school. This is to ensure things are not lost or damaged. Because of this, students are reminded to keep Fidget spinners at home. Please contact the College if you need further clarification on this matter.

Year 4 Author Visit
The Year 4 students were invited to the Marcellin Campus this week to hear from Author/Illustrators Mark Greenwood and Frane Lessac. Mark and Frane spoke to our budding young writers and illustrators and offered some tips. Thanks to Mr Peter Jones, Head of English for including our Lavalla students in this initiative.

IMG 2383Confirmation Retreat
On Wednesday our Year 6 students participated in their Confirmation Retreat in the Br Theophane Hall. Deacon Paul Reid attended along with the 24:7 Ministries Team. It was a fantastic faith-filled day in which the children reflected on their preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation. Click here to see more photos from the day.

K-Y2 School photos
Kindy - Year 2 school photos will be taking place on Friday 26 May. Parents are kindly reminded that students are to wear the appropriate uniform for the photos. Please check the Primary Intranet if you have any queries.
