Term 2 Week 2: From the Head of Primary

Welcome back to another exciting term. I hope you were all able to enjoy a well-earned rest over the Easter Holidays and had the opportunity to celebrate the risen Christ and take strength from sacrifices Jesus made for us. In Week 1, we also had the opportunity to commemorate ANZAC Day and remember the sacrifice service men and women made for us both in years past and present.

Appropriate Times to Speak to Staff
The key focus for our teaching staff is to engage your children in their learning. We acknowledge that communication between parents and teachers is vital in making sure that every student receives an individualised education here at Newman College. It is because of this that I ask parents to refrain from speaking with teachers after 8.45am. To ensure a settled environment, staff need to be engaged with their class. If you have reason to meet with your child’s teacher, it is advised that you make an appointment via email so they can address your issues without distraction and with complete attention. Thank you for your understanding of this important issue.

ANZAC Day Commemorations
Students in Kindy-Year 6 were able to respectfully commemorate the efforts of the men and women who served our country.
This year, the Year 6 students joined students from the Marcellin Campus for the ANZAC Ceremony at the Marcellin Campus. Tasmyn Floate, John Thompson and Reuben Keane were involved in laying a wreath and raising the flags from half-mast.
Students on the Marian Campus were led by Mrs Rich and Mrs Le Dan in their units through the story of Flanders Field.
On Friday, Year 6 Blue led a moving memorial to the ANZACs as part of their Prayer Assembly. We welcomed Guest Speaker, Navy Captain Michael Turner, who served our country for many years and was able to describe his service and that of his crew. Captain Turner went to a Marist school and was able to connect the spirit of the ANZASs to the life and legacy of St Marcellin Champagnat.

Homework Club returns at Lavalla in Term 2. This is an opportunity for your child to work in the Library with the support of our dedicated teachers. This week, Year 11 students will be joining us to help anyone who would like the extra support.

Next week our Years 3, 5 7 and 9 students will sit the NAPLAN tests for 2017. These tests allow the College to gain insightful information about our students. The College is doing all it can to ensure a settled environment for our students and we wish them all the best for next week.

I am pleased to announce that Mrs Lucinda Hope has been appointed as the Education Assistant in Pre Kindy Red working with Mrs Rebecca Rose.
