Term 2 Week 2: From the Deputy Principal | Mission and Catholic Identity

For Catholics throughout the world, the month of May is dedicated to the first disciple, Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary

As Marists (Mary-ists), Mary has a significant place within our own tradition. St Marcellin Champagant, the Founder of the Marist Brothers, drew his inspiration from the example of the discipleship of Mary. In forming the Marist Brothers, St Marcellin’s desire was to shape a group of people who would be recognised as having the same spirit of humility, generosity, and openness to the presence of God actively working in their lives. In 2017, we are called as Marists to ‘have the heart of a mother’ which reaches out in generosity, selflessness and love to those within our College community. ‘In the Way of Mary’ is one of our 5 Marist pillars, and it is helpful as we begin this month of May to reflect on what it means to live fully Mary’s spirit as a Marist community in our 200th year.

The 5 Marist Pillars

• Presence
• Family Spirit
• Love of Work
• Simplicity
In the way of Mary

  • We see Mary as a perfect model of the Marist educator – as an exemplar of the Christian life, as mother, as one who praised God
  • We see Mary as a woman on a journey of Faith
  • We believe Mary had a difficult life and ‘dust on her feet’
  • We consciously bring a Marial dimension to our teaching by prayer, imitating Mary’s tenderness, strength and constancy of faith

As we begin this month of May, let us continue to invite God to be with us as we walk Mary’s journey of ever-growing generosity, selflessness and love as the Marist family of Newman College.
