Term 2 Week 2: From the Acting Principal

As indicated in a letter to parents towards the end of Term 1, Mr Finneran is absent from the College during Weeks 1-3 of Term 2 due to his participation in the International Marist Pilgrimage. He is currently in Lyon in France which is where the Marist Project began 200 years ago. Mr Finneran will visit places of Marist significance, in particular, the first Marist school in La Valla. We look forward to hearing of his experiences upon his return.

This week we honoured all of those men and women who have served, and who continue to serve, in our armed forces to ensure the freedom and lifestyle we enjoy. Ceremonies raised our awareness of the enormous sacrifices that have been made by so many to ensure that we live in peace in Australia and also to continue to support peace efforts across the world. Services and activities were held across the campuses and all students conducted themselves in a most reverent and respectful manner. Visit Newman's Twitter page for more photos.

All parents are invited to the next NPCC meeting at Newman College which is scheduled for next Monday 8 May, 7.00pm, in the Marist Auditorium. As well as the usual agenda, outlined below, the Senior Leadership Team will present the College’s Code of Conduct. This Code of Conduct has been initiated by the Catholic Education WA and is mandatory across all Catholic Schools in Western Australia.

1. Prayer
2. Welcome
3. Reports from Heads of School
4. Code of Conduct Presentation
5. Report from NPCC Executive
6. Feedback Session
7. Close

NAPLAN testing is scheduled to occur during Week 3, 9-11 May, for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Relevant teachers will have prepared students for NAPLAN in the appropriate way in the lead up to the testing. Should parents have any queries regarding NAPLAN, please contact the classroom teacher.

Newman College achieved the best results to date at the most recent Carnival which was held during the April holidays. The conduct of all students was outstanding at all times, on and off the court, which is a great credit to themselves and their parents. Congratulations in particular to Caleb Probert Year 12 and Alysha Holmes Year 11 who were awarded the Marcellin Champagant Award and Samantha Ashby Year 11 who was selected in the Marist 1st V.

Our sincere thanks to coaches who spent many months preparing the teams - Mr Chris Cranley, Mr David Simonette, Mrs Tasha Richards; to the manager, Mr Alastair MacNeill and also Mr Simon Kanakis for travelling with the teams.
