Term 2 Week 10: From the Head of Primary

As we come to the end of another busy Term, I want to express how extremely proud I am of the hard work and determination shown by our students. As we reach the halfway mark of the year, the school reports offer us the opportunity to celebrate the efforts of our students in a range of academic pursuits. It is also a time to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our staff who give tirelessly to their profession, the College and most importantly to your child.

I wish you all a safe holiday and look forward to seeing you again in Term 3 as we continue to Shine Through Discovery here at Newman College.

Semester 1 Reports
Yesterday the K-6 reports were made available via SEQTA. Reports exemplify student efforts during the first half of the year and create an opportunity for you to talk to your child about their learning and to celebrate their journey. This is also an opportunity for you to continue to collaborate with your child’s classroom teacher. If you have any queries, please contact them to arrange a suitable time to meet.

image3Nature Play Materials Needed – Marian Campus
As our students continue to play imaginatively in the Marian nature play spaces, the need to replace and rejuvenate the materials they use has arisen. We are seeking help from our Primary community to collect the following materials and bring them to school next term:
• Long sticks
• Branches
• Log rounds – range of sizes
• Logs
• Planks of wood
• Twigs
• Smooth rocks
• Pine cones
• Gum nuts
• Banksia flowers
• Any loose natural materials

The students on the Marian Campus and I thank you for your generosity.

IMG 7496Winter Music Night
Last week we witnessed a wonderful celebration of our students' God given gifts and talents at the Winter Music Night. The College is blessed to have such dedicated music tutors working with our students through our Instrumental Program and to have Mrs Amanda Collins-Ford working with our choirs and units to produce music of the highest quality. Thank you to all who were involved. Click here to see more photos from the night.

Sports Equipment
The College will be investing in new sports equipment at both the Lavalla and Marian Campuses. This will look to further engage our students in a range of sports and activities and to be physically active. The Year 6 Student Councillors have surveyed the students to see what they want to play with at recess and lunch as we look to support our students’ wellbeing.

It is prudent to remember that Newman College sits within a great community. Therefore, please make sure you are kind and courteous to all of our neighbours when parking in the surrounding areas of our Campuses.

With regard to the Disabled Bay in the drive-through area on the Marian Campus, please be aware that the drive-through starts after the Disabled Bay. Please ensure that the Disabled Bay is kept free from congestion at all times.

There are parking restrictions in the surrounding streets, so please be considerate when attending the College. I am currently working with Stirling Council and will inform you of any progress made as soon as possible.

Primary Canteen Volunteers
At Newman College, we are blessed to have dedicated staff who prepare the recess and lunches for our students. However our Canteen Manager, Donna McFadden and her team, would appreciate your support. If you can help in the Canteen please contact me directly

IMG 2843Year 2 Prototype Space
The Prototype space at the Marian Campus in Year 2 has proven to be an exceptional way of targeting the needs of our students and supporting an individualised education for each child. This week, we surveyed the Year 2 students to see how they have enjoyed the experience and we look forward to sharing their results with you early next term, at a Parent Information Evening. I would like to acknowledge the staff who have worked so hard in this contemporary space and to all the Year 2 families for your support.

PALs Program
This semester, we have engaged our parent and grandparent community to assist with the running of our Parent Assisted Learning (PALs) Program, which supports our students with their reading. PALs connects students in need with a supportive adult who can listen to them read and help them to develop these vital skills. Thank you to our amazing volunteers and to Mrs Lara Gray for driving this initiative. If you would like to be part of this program please contact me directly

Beating Hearts Drum Band Performance
On Wednesday 28 June, Newman College's Beating Hearts Drum Band performed at Ocean Reef Primary School as part of a combined concert with the Ocean Reef Primary Drum Corps. Groups of musicians performed a set of songs for an audience of parents, teachers and students, including classic rocks songs such as Midnight Oil’s “Beds are Burning”, “Let Me Entertain You” by Robbie Williams, “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple, ACDC’s hit “It’s a Long Way to the Top” and the Newman College edition of "Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” by the Beatles.

Congratulations to all the performers on their entertaining set and a huge thank you to their director, Mr Peter Cobb for rehearsing and organising the performance. Beating Hearts will next perform at the Lavalla Campus Assembly on Friday 25 August.
