Term 1 Week 6: From the Head of Primary

As we move into the second half of Term 1, the opportunities for students to deeply engage in their learning and develop their God given gifts and talents continue.

Ash Wednesday
Newman NewsThis week the College commemorated the beginning of Lent by participating in Ash Wednesday Liturgies on each Campus. Fr Andrew and the Year 2’s led the Marian Campus in a meaningful Paraliturgy centred on caring for others at the St Cecilia Church. Year 6 Blue, Year 6 Green and Mrs Grinbergs led the Lavalla Campus in the Champagnat Chapel. We are reminded to use this Lenten period to grow from the ashes, to be courageous Catholics and to contribute to Project Compassion organised by Caritas.

New Staff
I am delighted to be able to introduce the following new staff members:

Mrs Lauren Gillespie STEM Teacher Lavalla
Miss Kate Gannaway Education Assistant Lavalla
Mrs Pauline Tutungis Education Assistant Lavalla
Mrs Meegan Seaborn Education Assistant Kindy Green

Parent Teacher Interviews
Weeks 7 and 8 are dedicated to Parent Teacher Interviews. The focus for 2017 is goal setting and staff will be utilising the data that has been collected to shape an individualised education plan for your child. A Google form will be sent to all families on Friday 10 March for you to select an interview time that suits, however, please have a few alternatives ready. Interviews will be 10 minutes in duration and Lavalla students are required to attend wearing their academic summer uniform.

STEM Program
The students in Years 4-6 will now have the unique opportunity to engage in project based, design focussed learning through the introduction of the new STEM classes. This new and dynamic learning area will engage students through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in an integrated program. Students will also develop the skills of inquiry, problem-solving, design, communication and collaboration, all vital for their success in the future.

IMG 20170308 154040Year 1 Parent Reading Workshop
Last Tuesday, the Year 1 teaching team supported by Lara Gray, Marian Support Coordinator, worked with the Year 1 parents at our reading workshop. The workshop informed parents how we target reading at Newman College and offered practical ways parents can work with their child at home. Thank you to all who attended.

Homework Club
Homework Club operates at the Lavalla Campus on Wednesdays from 3.15pm- 4.30pm. This time allows students to complete homework, projects or finish off work with assistance from our staff.

Primary Social Committee AGM
I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Primary Social Committee which held its AGM last week. While looking back at the success of past events and turning to the future, each member present was dedicated to the College and has worked tirelessly to bring joy to our community. I would like to thank the committee, in particular Alison Taylor for leading this team.

We encourage all PK-6 family members to attend the Primary Social Committee meetings so the entire Primary community is represented.

The next meeting will be held in the Marian Campus staffroom on Thursday 16 March at 7.00pm. We will be brainstorming ideas for future events so bring a friend and your ideas.

Families are reminded to ensure there is a constant flow in the drive through areas at both Marian and Lavalla Campuses during pick up time. If you are early to arrive or your child is not ready to be collected when you arrive, can you please park in the designated areas and collect them in person. This will help make sure our drive through areas are safe and working efficiently. We will make sure students are released from class on time to help in this matter. I appreciate your support and understanding.

Primary Movie Night
Thank you to all who attended the annual Primary Movie Night. Designed to welcome new families to the College and to reconnect those that have been with us for many years, the weather was perfect and a great night was had by all. Congratulations to the Primary Social Committee for its organisation of this community event.

Stay tuned to learn more about the work our Water Wise Committee will be doing to improve sustainability at our College. It is important our students are engaged in this area as they will be the ones responsible for the environment in the future.
