Term 1 Week 6: From the Deputy Principal | Learning and Staff Development

As we move into Week 7 of Term 1, all parents and students have been, or will be invited to attend Parent Teacher Student Interviews. These opportunities not only serve to reflect on the academic performance of the student to date but, more importantly, to discuss areas for improvement and growth. Goal setting is crucial as we support our students to be the best learners they can be. When learning goals are shared with parents and teachers, we can ensure that we have a common understanding of what the student seeks to accomplish, and how we can support them in achieving their goals.

IMG 5029Learning goals are important at all stages of a child’s development, moreover at all stages of the learning cycle. Our Vision for Learning, Shine through Discovery portrays an image of discovery of learning through inquiry, projects and experiments, discovering ‘the what’ and ‘the why’. For our early learners, personal organisation and following instructions are appropriate goals that both parents and teachers can support. As our students transition in Years 5 and 6, learning goals that support preparation for assessments become increasingly important as does time management and effective revision strategies. Our students in Year 10 must set goals that support their ambition to engage in certain pathways in Years 11 and 12.

IMG 5417Learning goals are about improving students’ learning and achievement. They are about students becoming active participants in the learning process, empowering them to become independent learners, and motivating them to achieve their full potential. I look forward to hearing from the students and their teachers in the weeks and months ahead about their progress and reflections towards their learning goals.
