Term 1 Week 4: From the Principal

Our Community’s faith and learning journey was celebrated during the past week with our High Achievers 2016 Assembly on 15 February and our Inaugural PK-12 Family Mass on 22 February. Both significant events highlight our College’s commitment to personal excellence and school improvement.

Our High Achievers Assembly celebrated the outstanding success of our Graduating Class of 2016. Recognising and affirming the significant achievement of having 35% of the cohort achieve over 90% in their ATAR, (top 10% of Western Australia) is critical to future success, as was recognising Brody Morgan for his outstanding achievement in VET Construction Industries.

Newman College provides tailored personalised learning pathways that are designed to allow our students to collaborate with teachers, to work hard and ultimately to flourish. Our students who attended the High Achievers Assembly (Year 6, Year 11 and Year 12) witnessed the future of what is possible for them. Academic and personal excellence is an ever-present goal for both the staff and students. This excellence is consistently achieved through learning that is both rich in diversity and broad in its depth of study, and with the support and guidance of highly qualified, professional teaching staff. We look forward to the learning success for 2017 across the life of the College.

Family Mass-1333Inaugural PK-12 Family Mass
As a Catholic community, we are founded upon the teachings of Jesus Christ and, as such, all that we do and for all that we strive is driven by social and moral imperatives and principles. Jesus says in John 10:10 that, “I came so that they may have life and have it to the full” and it is from this overarching premise that we seek to ensure that our students are helped to develop into not only lifelong learners, but active global citizens. This imperative is at the heart of our founder, St Marcellin Champagnat, as our students are engendered to make an active contribution to the society into which they will enter. As a faith community, we seek not only to pray together, but to action together. Jesus was not just about bringing all to the table; he was about making the circle bigger.

Our Inaugural PK-12 Family Mass was testimony to this ambition. Thank you to the 3000 people who made this night possible. It was remarkable to look back over the crowd and see the joy in their faces. To see the Pre Primary students witness and be present to the commissioning of the Year 6 and Year 12 Leaders was incredible. Celebrations such as this Mass serve to reinforce the dual moral purpose of a Catholic School, which is faith and learning.

Newman Parent Consultative Committee (NPCC)
Our first meeting for 2017 was held last Monday night 13 February 2017 in the Lavalla Multipurpose Room. Thank you to the 55 parents who could make the night and for their input. The minutes of the meeting are now located on our website. Click here.

Thank you to all students and families for their attendance at our Mass and we look forward to the opportunities on offer that lie ahead for our students.

May the love of Christ continue to bless our community.

John Finneran
