Term 1 Week 4: From the Head of Primary

Term 1 is in full swing and the students have been deeply engaged in their faith and learning at the college. The students are settled and have adjusted well to the next chapter in their learning journey.

This week we celebrated the Sacrament of the Eucharist as a connected and committed Marist community at the PK-12 Family Mass. I greatly appreciate families attending on the night as I see this as a wonderful step to building upon the outstanding faith community developed here at Newman College. The children were truly in the presence of God as we fostered the key elements of wellbeing in belonging and connectedness.

Learning

Parent Information Evenings
I would like to thank parents for attending the recent Parent Information Evenings at both the Marian and Lavalla Campuses and for being actively engaged in your child’s education. This partnership is vital for your child to succeed and achieve their personal best. Parents are invited to communicate freely with the school as we endeavour to offer a personalised education for every student.

The key areas covered by the Senior Leadership Team were Faith, Learning and Wellbeing. It is our dedication to these pillars of student development that allows us to enrich the development of the whole child.

Parent Teacher Interviews
The Parent Teacher Interviews will be held Wednesday 15 and Wednesday 22 March. However there will be other opportunities available for parents to have a 15 minute meeting if required. This is an opportunity for parents to sit with their child’s teacher, understand where they are at along the learning continuum and set goals for the year ahead. Once again, these interviews highlight the importance of being connected to the College and your child’s learning.

IMG 0817Homework Club
Homework Club commenced at the Lavalla Campus this week. Every Wednesday from 3.30-4.30pm, students are able to complete work in the Library with the support of teachers and staff. In the future, staff will be running mini tutorials on certain topics such as decimals, fractions, paragraph writing and guided reading suitable for Y3-6.

This week our Year 3 students enjoyed exploring all the different types of measurements as part of their Mathematics lesson in the new prototype rooms. See photos below.

Kalamunda History Village
Last week, our Year 1 students enjoyed their visit to the Kalamunda History Village. The students are currently learning about past and present family life from the History curriculum. Click here to see photos.

Works at St Cecilia's Church
On Tuesday 28 February there will be works carried out at St Cecilia’s Church which will cause disruptions to parking in our drive through. The works will commence at 7.00am and are scheduled to be completed by 10.00am. We ask parents to be patient and mindful of the care of our students during this time.

Parking
The College is continually looking at ways we can support families by improving our parking. I appreciate recent feedback and will continue to update the community on how we can all work together to ensure our children are safe during drop-off and pick-up.

2017 Outdoor Movie Night PosterPrimary Movie Night
We look forward to welcoming our new and existing families the Primary Movie Night on Friday 24 March at the Marian Campus. The movie will commence at 7.30pm and parents are reminded that this is an alcohol-free event. Thank you to the Primary Social Committee for organising this community building event.

I wish you all the best as we continue to journey together in your child’s education.
