Term 1 Week 10: From the Head of Primary

As Term 1 concludes, it is opportune to reflect on what we have achieved and how far we have come in these past 10 weeks. Students have settled well into their new classes and continued to grow in faith and learning. It has been an incredibly busy term and both staff and students are ready for a well-deserved break. I wish you all a safe Easter centred on Christ and I look forward to continuing the journey with you all in Term 2 when we return on Wednesday 26 April. God Bless.

In Week 9, we celebrated Grandparents Day where we welcomed grandparents to the Marian and Lavalla Campuses to experience the learning their grandchild is receiving here at Newman College. Personally, I was encouraged by the large number of family members who came to support and engage in the activities organised by the classroom teachers and the Leaders of Wellbeing. One of the highlights was the Photobooth at the Lavalla Campus, capturing this moment in time with all proceeds going to Caritas. Thank you to Mrs Le-Sanders for this new initiative. Click here to see more photos from the day.

I am truly grateful to the Primary Social Committee who expertly provided the refreshments on the day. I have not seen an operation work as smoothly to ensure everyone was able to enjoy some food and a hot cuppa. Thank you Alison Taylor for leading the team and to everyone who baked, cleaned, served, tidied and hosted. You are reason the day was such a success and why this school community is so strong.

Lavalla Parent Volunteers

Waste Wise Committee
Last week the Waste Wise Committee met to continue the work of sustainability at the Marian Campus. The dedicated team of staff discussed how we can continue to grow in this important area and how we can work with our students who will one day be leading the way in protecting our earth. Parents will have the opportunity to work with staff and students on our worm farm, recycling plant and our garden beds. A call for volunteers will be published early next term.

ANZAC Day Celebrations
In Week 1 Term 2, we will be commemorating those who fought for this country so we could enjoy the freedom we have today. The Marian students will remember the ANZACs in their units with a fitting tribute to those that served. The Lavalla students will attend a wreath laying ceremony on Wednesday 26 April at 11.00am at the Marcellin Campus and will then be led by Year 6 Blue in a ceremony at 9.00am on Friday 28 April in the Br Theophane Hall. We will welcome Capt. Michael Turner from the Royal Australian Navy as our special guest speaker.

Uniform and Grooming Expectations
As we take time to rest on the holidays, it may also be a good time to remember the expectations we have of our students here at the College, especially grooming. Can you please ensure your child comes to school adhering to the College standards at all times. Thank you for your support in this matter. Term 2 commences at 8.45am on Wednesday 26 April and all students are to wear full academic winter uniform upon return. The winter uniform requirements are published in the Student Diary, (pages 14 and 15).

Easter Raffle
Thank you to everyone who donated to the PK-Y6 Easter Raffle that was drawn on Friday. We had the biggest number of eggs in history and I thank in particular all the parents who helped wrap the baskets. This community event highlights the generosity of time, money and spirit of our community. If you purchased a ticket, thank you for supporting such a worthy cause.
