Term 1 Week 10: From the Deputy Principal | Mission and Catholic Identity

As we prepare for the commencement of Easter this coming Friday, we have the opportunity to reflect on the call to live-out our Christian vocation as people who live with the hope and the joy of the resurrection. Pope Francis’s recent call to all young people to ‘seek new lands’ invites each of us to live the resurrection in our own lives through inviting God to take the lead.

IMG 6272PK-12 Easter Liturgies
Across the College last week, members of our PK-12 community have had the opportunity to come together to reflect on the Easter season through our Paraliturgies. As a Catholic school in the Marist Tradition, we seek to create spaces where our students, staff and parents have the opportunity to come to know Jesus Christ through experiences of prayer, sacrament and community. Each of these liturgies have allowed our community to pause, reflect and consider the significance of our faith journey as both individuals and a community, as we journey into Holy Week. Thank you to parents, teachers and students who so wonderfully prepared these liturgies. See our Twitter page for more photos!

Caritas Fast – Wednesday 5 April
At the Marcellin Campus last week, 261 students participated in the annual Caritas Fast to raise funds for Project Compassion. In coming to understand the realities of those who are deprived of food and nourishment every day, our staff and students who participated in the Caritas Fast sought to stand in solidarity with those who we have sought to assist this Lenten Season through the work of Project Compassion. Thank you to Mrs Lindsay, Julia Diamond and Sarah Wright (Year 12 Social Justice Captains), the Guild Coordinators and our Canteen Manager, Mrs McFadden, for organising a very successful day. See our Twitter page for more photos!.

Mothers Day Invite FinalNewman College Mothers Day Eve Mass – Saturday 13 May
Parents, students, ex-students, staff and members of the Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat are invited to come together on Saturday 13 May on the eve of Mothers Day at St Cecilia’s Church to celebrate the gift of our mothers, both those who are with us, and those who have gone before us. As part of our intention to work in collaboration with the parish communities of our local area, this is yet another opportunity for our Newman College community to gather, pray together, and to join for hospitality following Mass which will be provided by the College. Please see the invitation for further details of this event. We are currently seeking volunteers to assist with this event in the following areas:

1. Greeters at the entrance of the church
2. Readers for Mass
3. Special Ministers of the Eucharist
4. Singers and Musicians
5. Assistance with serving supper following Mass

Please email Mrs Dianne Grinbergs (Religious Education Coordinator, Primary and Parish Liaison – if you are available to be present and assist on the night.

Celebrating the Sacraments – Lavalla Campus
As is the practice in the Archdiocese of Perth, students are prepared to receive the Sacraments by each school, and then go to their local parish to receive these Sacraments (Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation). As a College, we would like to affirm and celebrate the journey each of our young people are making in their faith by celebrating and acknowledging them after they have made the Sacraments by presenting them at assembly. We would ask for the support of parents in assisting us to do this by forwarding a copy of the certificate issued by your parish following your son or daughter receiving their Sacraments. This will also allow us to update your son or daughter’s school record to reflect the Sacraments they have received. As a new process, please forward a copy of this certificate issued by your parish via email or mail to indicate the completion of the sacrament to our College Registrar, Mrs Flora Hughes (

With blessings in abundance in anticipation of Holy Week and a safe holiday period.
