Remar Blue Solidarity Camp Highlights

On Wednesday 23 August, the Remar Blue Caravel along with our two helms, Mrs Bramanto and Mr Robinett and the Newman Remar Coordinator, Mrs O'Mahony travelled to Mullewa, a multicultural community in Western Australia, for our Blue Solidarity Camp.

On this camp we were challenged to live in solidarity with the Mullewa community and try our best to live out the aims of our blue crossing; humility, loyalty and solidarity. Whilst in Mullewa, we stayed at the local catholic primary school Our Lady of Mount Carmel (OLMC).

One of the major tasks during the camp was helping set up, run and clean up the local Mullewa Agricultural Show (this is one of Mullewa’s largest and most popular yearly events that the town wouldn’t be able to run without the help of Newman Remar students).
We also volunteered at, and dismantled the Wildflower Show, another popular event in the town.

We were fortunate to be able to clean up the local Pioneer Cemetery with the help of the Years 3-6 from OLMC. We de-weeded the cemetery and placed crosses and flowers that were blessed by Father Robert O’Brian on unmarked graves. We were able to spend some time with the students of OLMC, where we helped out in classes and we organised both a school mass and a disco on our last day there.

During the camp we also made regular visits to the local Youth Centre for Indigenous Australian Children and Teenagers.

Our Caravel got a lot out of this camp. We became much closer as a whole and formed a stronger group dynamic through discovering the strengths and weaknesses of each Rower. We also learnt the importance of standing in solidarity and being present in a community. Our camp in Mullewa definitely challenged us, but in the best way possible. None of us will ever forget the experiences we had this past week and we will look back on this camp as a time of growth for our Caravel, as well as an awesome week spent giving back to such an amazing community.
