News from the English Department

The English Department held two very exciting incursions this week.
The Year 11 General classes welcomed Kris Howl, a senior level designer for the gaming company Blizzard in California, into the classroom via a Skype link. Kris gave some insights into his own experience in the gaming industry as well as some tips on how to go about creating a game sequence based on "The Merchant Of Venice" which we are currently studying in class. The session included a Question and Answer section where students could find out the answers to some burning ‘gaming’ questions and seek advice on how to succeed in the industry. We hope to be able to incorporate more Skype interviews/information sessions in the future as a way of engaging students in a manner in which they can relate.
On Tuesday, a member from the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions at UWA came into our Year 8 English Extension class. In 50 minutes students were challenged to use emotions in their understanding and analysis of Shakespeare’s plays. Students were also treated to an entertaining performance from the play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
