Gifted and Talented at Art Gallery Year 9

Gifted and Talented at Art Gallery Year 9

Year 9 Gifted and Talented ‘Beyond Thinking’ Excursion:
Art Gallery of Western Australia

Throughout last term in our Year 9 elective, Beyond Thinking, we studied the philosophy of art and aesthetics. This concluded with an excursion to the Art Gallery. It was a thought-provoking experience as we were taken on a guided tour through the gallery where we learnt a lot about what art is, and what it could be. This came to a point with a painting titled “Unknown Melbourne” which for most, was little more than a large black painting with a yellow strip around the outside of it acting as a border. The guides were very well-informed and attempted to outline why “Unknown Melbourne” was a good piece, and a serious discussion about the origin of art, and whether or not it was a good art piece, soon ensued. We then saw some beautiful paintings in the ‘Perspectives’ exhibit, which show-cased the best art pieces by Year 12 students from the previous year, followed by the gallery’s latest exhibition entitled ‘Impact’. To conclude our experience of the trip, we participated in a workshop, each made our own collage to symbolise different aspects of life such as joy, death, conflict and peace. Overall, it was a illuminating day that brilliantly capped off our art and aesthetics topic for the term. Thanks to Mrs Wills and Mr Richards for their efforts in organising the day.
