Art and Philosophy Day 2014

Art and Philosophy Day 2014

On Friday the 7th of November, I was lucky enough to be one of four Year 7 students, along with Anne Johnston, Jacob Arto and John Travaglini, to attend the 2014 Art and Philosophy Day. The event was held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
Approximately 80 students from around 20 different schools including St Mary’s, Penrhos, Perth College and John XXIII were in attendance on the day.
In the first two sessions of the day we were split into groups of 8. Each group had a designated piece of art somewhere in the gallery and we had a set of questions to answer about the piece, for example, ‘What could the colours represent in this piece?’, ‘What meaning might this artwork have?’, ‘What does this artwork say about what it is to be human?’ and ‘Is this artwork beautiful?’.
After completing the questions we had the opportunity to experience the Gallery’s latest exhibition titled, Richard Avedon: People. While looking at the photographer’s range of portraits of famous and everyday people, each group was given a mystery question to think about and provide an answer to. Our answers were discussed in a very engaging forum amongst the students involved.
Overall, it was a very interesting day, leaving us with a lot to think about.
