Term 3 Week 5: From the Principal

Feast of the Assumption

This week we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption with two Masses - Years 7-12 on Tuesday at the Marcellin Campus Gym and K-6 at the Marist Auditorium today. This is a significant event in the life of the Church as it commemorates the ancient belief that Mary was assumed into heaven. The Church teaches us that Mary was without sin, that she freely accepted God’s will and perfectly obeyed. She served God and followed her son, Jesus Christ. As reward, Mary was assumed into heaven into the company of God and the Saints.

For Newman College, the significance of this day resides in the Marian spirituality that permeates our Marist community. We celebrate our mission which is centred on Jesus Christ and the faith, love and hope that grounds what we do and how we seek to live our life. In all, it was Mary who accepted the invitation to bear God and bring him into the world. It is this call that should inspire all of us in all that we do.

Enrolment Year 7 2020, Tour and Information Evening
Newman College commenced the enrolment process for students currently in Year 4 entering Year 7 in 2020, with a twilight tour and information session for interested families. The night was attended by in excess of 300 people and was a significant community engagement event in the College calendar.

The highlight of the evening was the willingness of over 60 students to be of service on the night in a variety of ways - participating in tours, performing musical items and speaking to the audience. Those who attended the event were fulsome in their praise for our students. I wish to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of those students who were outstanding ambassadors for our school. Thanks also to the parents who were available to drop off and collect their children on the evening.

(The photo below shows a number of these students being presented to and thanked by the audience through a round of applause.)

  • Newman Parents Consultative Committee: Thanks to those parents and guardians who attended the NPCC meeting last Monday evening. Topics covered by the Senior Leadership Team included funding, new College website, proposed pool complex refurbishment, new Ministry Team appointment, NAPLAN data, Behaviour Management Policy, Year 11 Leadership Program and improvement of attendance rates. The feedback aspect of the meeting requested clarification on issues such as Capital Works, BYODs, flexible learning spaces and assessment. The minutes of this meeting have now been published on the College website. Please click here to access.
  • Newman Parents: Parents are encouraged to attend the next event on Monday 11 September, presented by Glenn Mitchell, on the topic ‘Raising Great Kids’. Please click here for more details. Invitations to this event have been extended beyond the Newman College community and so it is important to register your attendance at the earliest convenience.

  • Arts Festival Committee: This group will be convening later in Term 3 to plan the 2018 event. In the meantime, the Committee is seeking a Chairperson and also two Art Coordinators. It is hoped that these positions can be filled within the next few weeks and the successful candidates available to attend the first meeting. I ask interested parents to make contact with me via Josie Parker josie.parker@cewa.edu.au at the earliest convenience.

May Christ bless our community,

John Finneran
