Term 3 Week 3: From the Deputy Principal | Mission and Catholic Identity

School Visits & Marist Schools Australia Biennial Conference (28 July – 2 August)
The triptych that welcomes all those visiting Marist College Bendigo immediately reminds the visitor that they are entering a place that is marked by a distinctive way of living the Gospel of Jesus Christ, with a distinctively Marian dimension. Last week, John Finneran, Nikita Shaw, Br Terry and myself had the opportunity to visit our fellow Marist schools in Bendigo (a PK-12 school that commenced in 2015), and Assumption College Kilmore, prior to attending the Biennial Marist Schools Australia Conference: ‘But how can this be? Bringing Christ Life to birth as Mary today’.

The Conference’s keynote speaker, Fr Kevin Lenehan, challenged and affirmed those gathered from across Australia’s 54 Marist schools in their work of providing their communities with authentic encounters with the Gospel in a world increasingly disengaged with institutional religion and belief systems. We in Australia, and across the Marist world (80 countries), are uniquely placed to continue to discern Pope Francis’ call to being an expression of Church which is ‘capable of walking at people’s side’ as we move into our third century of Marist life.

The Youth Chaplain role will seek to support the spiritual, social, and emotional wellbeing of students at Newman College. Roger will work across our three Campuses, and will be based in the boardroom of the Champagnat Chapel, forming a significant part of the developing College Ministry Team. Commissioning of Year 11 Student Leaders – Thursday 3 August
On Thursday 3 August, 40 Year 11 students were commissioned at our weekly Newman College Community Mass. In re-framing the opportunities for senior (Year 12) leadership within the College, these students have put themselves forward in an expression of willingness to lead the College in Year 12. In the coming three weeks, these students will be provided with weekly meetings and mentoring from experienced leaders:

  • Friday 4 August: ‘Characteristics of a Good Leader’: Facilitated by Mr Ben Grose (Leader of Wellbeing – Year 11)
  • Friday 11 August: ‘Leadership & Faith’: Facilitated by Mr Daniel Lynch (Deputy Principal | Mission & Catholic Identity)
  • Friday 18 August: ‘Leadership for Learning: Shine Through Discovery’: Facilitated by Ms Lisa Fogliani (Deputy Principal | Learning & Staff Development)

It is from this group of students that our 2018 College Leadership will be drawn from. As we seek to grow this discernment process with our Year 11 students, our hope is that we continue to develop the leadership capacity of each student across the cohort.
