ACC Hockey Carnival Highlights

ACC Girls Hockey Report

On Thursday 15 June, the Newman College ACC Girls Hockey Team, consisting of students from Years 9 to 12 participated in the annual ACC Hockey Carnival. After many weeks of cold early morning training sessions, the team’s efforts finally paid off with an admirable 2nd place in the competition. This is the best result in the history of our participation in the event.

The day started with a tight match against last year’s winners, Mercedes College, which we lost 2-1. We won the next 3 games comfortably, after getting used to playing on grass and playing together as a team.
These results placed us second in our pool and caused for a nail biting semi-final match against John XXIII College (JTC). JTC came at us hard and fast. We were on the defense straight away. A breakaway led to Newman scoring a goal, putting ourselves in front. JTC fought hard to get a goal back and, unfortunately, they did. The game ended in a draw forcing the teams to participate in penalty strokes. The first round ended in another draw, 3 goals each. The umpires elected to go to a sudden death round which caused much tension and excitement and, thanks to our girls staying calm and focused, we won!

In the Grand Final we, once again, had to face Mercedes College. Unfortunately, they scored an early goal but Newman came back determined, worked hard, fought long and put Mercedes on the defensive for the rest of the game. We had many scoring opportunities but did not manage to get the ball into the box and lost 0-1.

We finished the day feeling proud of the efforts of the team and each team member. There was no better way to celebrate than with the traditional hot chips!

We would like to thank Mr Connell for his support and energy that he shared with the team, and to Br Terry our ‘lucky charm’, who stayed and supported us all day.

ACC Boys Hockey Report

The annual ACC Boys Hockey Carnival was played at UWA Sports Park on Thursday 22 June. In the round games we played a total of 5 x 25 minute games.

We started off with 2 wins, but really failed to capitalise on numerous scoring opportunities. Our game against Nagle College was a tight tussle. Again we had some very good chances to score but eventually we went down 1-0 (Nagle played off in the Grand Final). CBC are always a hard team to play and they made the most of their opportunities to secure a 3-1 victory. I was very proud of the way the boys performed both on and off the field. They worked extremely hard to achieve a very good result.

Special congratulations to the following Year 12 students who have been a part of the hockey program for four years: Jason Goodson, Jake Hay and Andrew Smith
