2015 School Surfing Competition

2015 School Surfing Competition

The 2015 School Surfing Competition was held last Friday at Trigg Beach. Although early February is not noted for swell in Perth, surfers arrived eagerly and were greeted with two to three foot grinding waves. With an increasingly strong southerly wind blowing, conditions were both fun and challenging. All 40 competitors bravely charged in and took to the water with gusto, determined to show off their skills to the judges, enthusiastic peers and supportive parents.

Although there were many wipeouts, there was lots of high quality surfing, with students trying to execute big moves in the most critical part of the wave. The highlight of the day came in the dying seconds of the last final when Jack Mercer took a steep drop and pulled under the lip to score a clean barrel, ensuring him victory in the Senior Boys Surfing Final. Other Winners on the day were;
Callum Jamieson - Junior Boys Surfing
Rosie Mahony – Senior Girls Surfing
Brendan Wain – Senior Boys Body Surfing
Liam Kelly – Junior Boys Body Boarding
The top 25 ranked students will now start preparing for the State Zone Finals where we will look to build on our successes from last year. A huge thank you to Mr Pugh who has worked tirelessly to make sure the event ran smoothly. Mr Pugh has run the College Surfing program for many years now, providing students who may not necessarily excel in the classroom, with opportunities to experience enjoyment and success in a supportive and healthy team environment.
Mr Connell, Head of Sport
