2015 Music Tour

On the 27th of June, 53 music students and 4 staff departed for Sydney to participate in the 26th Australian International Music Festival. The Concert Band, Jazz Band and Choir rehearsed intensively for 6 months to prepare repertoire for a variety of formal and informal concerts at venues in and around Sydney, including the Sydney Opera House, the Conservatorium of Music’s Verbrugghen Hall, Darling Harbour, St Mary’s Cathedral and the Sydney Town Hall. All their efforts paid off as the ensembles received high praise from the adjudicators.
As part of the festival, the Concert Band attended a masterclass, by renowned Australian musician/composer Dr Ralph Hultgren, where the band developed and refined their ensemble skills. These students also enjoyed a rehearsal exchange with the Belmont High School Concert Band. The choir were provided with opportunities of their own, including performing in the Massed choir, accompanied by one of the participating Symphony Orchestras. Students were delighted and inspired by performances by other participating ensembles, and were enthusiastic to meet and perform with musicians from all over the world including New Zealand, America, Hong Kong, India and Indonesia. Students returned on 4th of July, tired but musically, culturally and socially enriched.
Visits to Taronga Zoo, a cruise of the Sydney Harbour, a tour of the Rocks district and shopping at Centre Point were some other highlights of an extremely busy week for the tour group.
Many thanks must go to the students for their extra hard work before and during the tour, and parents for their support. A special thank you to Mrs Kimberley Lloyd and Mr Philip Everall for working so hard with their ensembles before and during the festival. Many thanks to Mr Paul Rafter for giving up his time to come with the group to Sydney.
Margaret Goldsmith, Acting Coordinator of Music
